Exercising: When to Use a Spotter

You should always use a spotter with free weight strength training exercises. A spotter is there for your safety during weight training.

Spotters are essential to help you push the limit and complete your last rep and help you rack the bar. But their most important role is as a critical support system to help you control the weight if you falter. A spotter should serve as a safety mechanism and motivator.

But if not done properly, a spotter can actually hurt your workout. Here’s how: a spotter should not assist you on every rep. If they are, you can end up not putting in the full effort in on each rep. You may feel better about lifting a heavier weight or doing more reps, but in reality you shorted your workout by not fully lifting the weight on your own. The spotter’s job is to provide just enough support to complete a few more reps than you would if you were lifting alone.

If you’re working with someone who has not been a spotter in the past, review their role before you start lifting. Explain your goals and how many lifts you plan on doing. Also develop a signal or verbal cue to let them know when you need help.

A personal trainer is the best spotter during weight lifting. A personal trainer will watch your form to make sure you’re doing the exercise correctly. A personal trainer can tell you when you’re ready to increase the weight, duration and intensity to help you get the most out of your workout.
